Arraial
do Cabo (*)
Only 110 miles (170 km) east of Rio,
a surprisingly small and refreshing city, has the most beautiful
beaches in the state. This area is ideal for scuba diving or snorkeling.
Can be extended to Búzios, 22 miles (35 km). |
Buzios
(*)
Brigitte Bardott fell in love with
the beautiful beaches and night life of Búzios. The famous
Rua das Pedras at night, in the center of Buzios, is the right place
for those who look for a pleasant nightlife. |

Paraty
(*)
A
trip into the past, among the splendidly preserved colonial buildings.
There started the Golden Road, paved by slaves with rough stones,
leading to Ouro
Prêto. Nice beaches, old farms, sugar cane
distilleries, waterfalls and a horseback riding tour along the Golden
Road are some of the options available. |
Teresópolis
and Petrópolis
A
full day crossing the Serra dos Órgãos National Park
at Teresópolis, the view of Rio from Soberbo Lookout, with
God's Finger Peak, and an extended visit to Petrópolis with
it's Imperial Museum, the Cathedral, Santos Dumont's house and Cristal
Palace among other attractions. |

Itatiaia
National Park
(*)
Hiking
and/or birdwatching are the main options among waterfalls, only
100 miles (160km) west of Rio, beside the Rio-São Paulo highway.
Option: trekking to Agulhas Negras Peak (2787m) or Prateleiras ,
both in a 2540m high valley, with an incredible rock formation. |
Coffee
Farms (*)
Along Paraiba do Sul River valley started
most of the Coffee Farms, some opened for visitation. Today almost
no coffee plantations can be found in that area. A good example
is the Ponte Alta Farm at Barra do Piraí, among others in
the same area. |
